“Safer Together” — Honoring the Life of Malcolm-Jamal Warner

July 20–26, 2025

Each summer, the Lifesaving Society leads National Drowning Prevention Week (NDPW) to spotlight a sobering truth: too many lives are lost to drowning — a tragedy that is often swift, silent, and preventable.

This year, the week carries an especially emotional weight following the tragic death of beloved actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who drowned off the coast of Cocles Beach in Limon, Costa Rica on Sunday, July 20, the first day of NDPW 2025.

Remembering Malcolm-Jamal Warner

Warner, best known for his Emmy-nominated role as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, was 54. Authorities reported that he was caught in a rip current while swimming alone and could not be resuscitated despite the efforts of bystanders and the Costa Rican Red Cross. His official cause of death was asphyxia due to drowning.

For millions, Warner was more than a household name — he was a symbol of excellence, resilience, and Black artistic achievement. From Malcolm & Eddie to The Resident, his career spanned four decades and left an indelible mark on television, music, poetry, and cultural dialogue. He was also a Grammy winner and outspoken advocate for mental health in the Black community, most recently launching the podcast Not All Hood in 2024.

In one of his final interviews, Warner shared, “I’ve had such an awesome life… If I die tomorrow, I know I would go with a smile on my face.” That quote hits harder today than ever before.

Safer Together, Because Drowning Doesn’t Discriminate

This year’s NDPW theme,  “Safer Together,” is more than a slogan. It’s a reality underscored by Warner’s death.

Even strong swimmers are vulnerable without essential safety measures. Warner’s passing is a heartbreaking reminder that no one is immune, no matter how experienced, healthy, or accomplished they may be.

5 Key Safety Takeaways:

  • Never swim alone, always use the buddy system.

  • Swim only in lifeguard-supervised zones.

  • Learn to identify and escape rip currents.

  • Keep non-swimmers and children within arm’s reach.

  • Avoid swimming or boating under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

A Legacy That Saves Lives

Malcolm-Jamal Warner once said that his proudest accomplishment was building a meaningful life and career beyond The Cosby Show, one rooted in peace, purpose, and authenticity.

As we grieve his loss, let us also honor his legacy by ensuring his death is not in vain. By speaking up, sharing knowledge, and supporting drowning prevention efforts, we can help protect others — one life, one ripple at a time.

Because in the end, we are always… Safer Together.

Abso-fucking-lutely a psychological thriller. For the longest time when I was in the water and seaweed would hit my leg I'd Scooby Doo it back to the shore.

People my age, which you are about that area, were terrified of the ocean.

The look I have when someone tells me Jaws is not a horror movie.

That film scared an entire generation out of the water.
