Day 6: Caffeine and Constitution

Day six of furlough. I rose at 0600, half from discipline, half from the siren call of a Venti White Chocolate Mocha. Breakfast, if you can call it that, came in a cup labeled with my name spelled wrong. A reminder that even in times of uncertainty, some bureaucracies remain consistent.

Remington’s morning briefing was concise: “BOOF.” Translation: the neighborhood cat coalition made a pass through the front yard but respected the established borders. Deterrence works.

Mittens submitted his intelligence update from the windowsill, claiming the bird has entered peace talks, though he remains suspicious of its “winged agenda.” Tabby immediately interrupted with a breaking exposé: leaked photos show Mittens napping during last night’s watch shift. A scandal, if true.

While investigations unfolded, I began drafting the Living Room Republic Constitution. Article I declares snacks a fundamental right. Article II protects afternoon naps. Article III limits Remington’s barking privileges to “times of genuine crisis or suspicious squirrels.” Ratification may take time.

I opened XSplit to adjust transitions again, added one called “Legislative Dissolve.” It crashes occasionally, which feels authentic. Then I revisited Shutdown Blues (Gallbladder Mix) and wrote a line about running on caffeine and confusion. It’s starting to sound like a national anthem.

Morale check: steady. Coffee supply is strong, faith in leadership remains mostly intact, and the Living Room Republic endures. Congress still silent. Remington remains vigilant.

That marriage, thunder & lightning sign in Still Saying Yes? It’s real. It hangs near our front door. Sweets and I have been doing this since 1994. Not perfect marriage. Real marriage. Still choosing each other.

Hey @joshuagates, bucket-list pitch: take me on an #ExpeditionUnknown dive. I want to know what it feels like to descend onto a wreck, lost city, or ancient site and see something only a handful of people on Earth have ever seen. I’ll carry the tanks. 🤿
