Day 26: Return of the Return

Day twenty-six of furlough. I woke at 0600, caffeine calling as usual. Coffee in hand, I stared out the window like a man awaiting orders that will never come. The world outside was calm — suspiciously so. The kind of calm that usually precedes another Amazon errand.

Today’s schedule: barber appointment, maybe a truck wash, and, inevitably, another Amazon return — this time the infamous Halloween garage door cover. The ghosts and ghouls didn’t even make it to October before being recalled. Somewhere, Jeff Bezos is laughing as I re-tape another box and prepare for another “quick trip.”

The barber visit feels necessary. After twenty-six days of furlough, the hair situation has shifted from “rugged” to “regional folklore.” I’m half-expecting the stylist to charge me for an archeological dig. The plan afterward: maybe wash Ol’ Blue, though weather and motivation may have other ideas.

Remington greeted the morning with enthusiasm, tail wagging and tongue ready for quality control of my coffee. Mittens, unimpressed as ever, sat nearby supervising the Amazon box — possibly to ensure I don’t change my mind again. Tabby, meanwhile, appears to be in hiding, likely because she knows “garage door cover” means more human activity than she’s emotionally prepared for.

Morale check: calm and caffeinated. Haircut incoming, return pending, truck shining (in theory). The Living Room Republic continues to maintain operational stability — though morale may depend on whether the Amazon drop-off line is merciful today.

That marriage, thunder & lightning sign in Still Saying Yes? It’s real. It hangs near our front door. Sweets and I have been doing this since 1994. Not perfect marriage. Real marriage. Still choosing each other.

Hey @joshuagates, bucket-list pitch: take me on an #ExpeditionUnknown dive. I want to know what it feels like to descend onto a wreck, lost city, or ancient site and see something only a handful of people on Earth have ever seen. I’ll carry the tanks. 🤿
